New Delhi: Flavoured water has become increasingly popular in India, with more varieties popping up in supermarkets and retail stores all the time. You might not find them easily in your neighborhood grocery store, but soon if we believe in the trend you may find it everywhere.

But festive colours and tempting flavours aside, many health conscious Indians have also made the switch to flavoured water as a healthy substitute for sodas. So, maybe it’s time to find out just how healthy flavoured water is.

Flavoured Water vs Soda/Cold Drinks:

Flavoured water beverages are mainly targeted at consumers who would normally reach for a bottle of cola, which is why many of them are sweetened to cater to their taste buds. While some are sweetened naturally, many use artificial sweeteners and flavour enhancers.

Most flavoured water drinks are also free of caffeine, which is a common ingredient in most colas. As with diet sodas however, moderation is important, as overconsumption can pose several health risks and more research on the safety of such products is needed.

In the meantime, there’s no denying that in many cases flavoured water is healthier than traditional sodas.

Fruit flavoured water drinks could also be healthier than colas, as they are prepared with natural extracts from fruits. But it is always advisory that you should read the ingredient section first before drinking.

Flavoured Water for Weight Loss:

To some extent, flavoured water can help with weight loss, as it works as a calorie free alternative to sodas.

If you’re trying to lose weight, flavoured water is a better option than most sodas, as many of these new drinks contain no calories. This is especially helpful if you are in the habit of sipping on a drink while eating, as it means you’re not adding to the calorie intake you’re already getting from your meal.

But it still has some set back.

Flavoured water products may pose a health risk because of artificial sweeteners and nutritional enhancements, many of which have not been subjected to adequate scrutiny.

Checking labels will help avoid flavoured water with sugar and fructose corn syrup, both of which are high in calories, but you also need to be wary of drinks with artificial sweeteners, as studies show that they can induce greater cravings for sugar, often encouraging unhealthy food choices.

Some healthy flavoured water products also pose a health risk. Yes, vitamin water can be healthy, but if you are already taking nutritional supplements like multi-vitamins there is a risk of overdosing on certain nutrients.

Even drinks that are flavoured with natural fruit extracts could be unhealthy, as they tend to be high in sodium.

The final verdict would be that it’s okay to consume flavoured water as an occasional treat and a healthier alternative to colas, but don’t fool yourself into believing that they are healthy.
