Mukesh Choudhary scythed through Mumbai Indians' top order to remove Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan for duck in the powerplay. He then removed Dewald Brevis for seven, reducing Mumbai to 23/3 in the first three overs at the DY Patil Stadium. Mitchell Santner affected further damage by taking the prized wicket of Suryakumar Yadav (32). Kieron Pollard also perished cheaply but youngster Tilak Varma notched up a brilliant half-century to bail Mumbai out of a precarious position.

Varma's fighting 51 powered Mumbai to 155/7 in 20 overs. Earlier, Chennai skipper Ravindra Jadeja won the toss and elected to bowl first. Four-time champions CSK made two changes, replacing Moeen Ali and Chris Jordan with Dwaine Pretorius and Mitchell Santner. Mumbai made three changes, bringing in Riley Meredith, Daniel Sams and Hrithik Shokeen. Mumbai are seeking their first win of the season.

Chennai also have had a torrid time this season.

With five losses from six games, the side is just one place above bottom-placed Mumbai.
