AAP removes Bangladeshi scholar from posters after media exposes blunder

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has now removed a section of posters in which the party misidentified a Bangladeshi scholar as an Indian freedom fighter. This comes after India Today exposed the blunder.

The AAP wanted to feature Indian scholar Mahmud Hasan Deobandi on the flex board put up several months ago at the 'freedom fighter fountain' in Delhi's Jamia Nagar. Deobandi is one of the co-founders of Jamia Millia University in Delhi's Jamia Nagar.

However, the final print had the photo of Bangladeshi Islamic scholar Maulana Mahmudul Hasan alongside photos of Indian freedom fighters like Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Sukhdev, Shaheed Ashfaqullah Khan, and others.

Later, AAP MLA Amanattulah Khan ordered the removal of his picture overnight. Maulana Mahmudul Hasan's image has been cut out from the posters after a media group exposed the gaffe.

Mahmudul Hasan is a well-known pro-government Islamic scholar, writer, religious reformer, educator, public speaker and spiritual figure. He was born on July 5,1950 in a village called Charkharicha under Kotwali Thana in Mymensingh district, Bangladesh.

In 2020, Maulana Mahmudul Hasan was elected as the new chairman of Bangladesh Qawmi Madrasa Education Board (Befaq).

Currently, he is Khatib at Gulshan Central Azad Mosque and Eidgah Society, Amir of Majlish-e-Dawatul Haque Bangladesh.
