#Court'sTime: Justice D Y Chandrachud Calls For Change In Supreme Court's Working Pattern

210

Justice D Y Chandrachud on Friday called for a change in the working pattern of the Supreme Court and said there is a need to change the way lawyers work in the apex court.

During the hearing today, the judge said,"Each one of you must realise that court's time is valuable. We invest our time in reading files and then advocates come and simply ask for adjournment. I fail to understand why you have to file a case when you don't want to argue?"

The judge made the remark when a lawyer appearing before him sought adjournment in the case.

"You have to change the style of working in the Supreme Court. Judges read briefs and then lawyers don't argue," he said.

Justice Chandrachud further added, "Lawyers often complain that matters are not listed, but seek adjournment when their cases come up." However, Justice Chandrachud made it clear that adjournment can be sought only on account of Covid-19 or a bereavement in the family and not otherwise.

Justice D Y chandrachud will take over as Chief Justice of India (CJI) in November this year for a period of nearly two years.
