#Olympics: Mirabai Chanu secures first medal for India at Tokyo

New Delhi:  Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has secured first medal for the country at Tokyo Olympics, winning the silver medal in the women’s 49 kilogram category. She lifted a  total 202 kilograms in clean and jerk category. Hou Zhihui of China won the gold lifting 210 kilograms creating an Olympic record.

In  Tennis, India’s Sumit Nagal won his first round men’s singles match 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 against Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin while in women’s singles Suteertha Mukharjee defeated Bergstroem Linda 4-3 in first round.

Indian Archers Deepika Kumari and Pravin Jadhav lost to South Korea’s An San and Kim Je Deok 6-2 in quarter final. In Badminton, Chirag Shetty and Rankireddy have defeated Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Taipae 21-16, 16-21, 27-25 in a group ‘A’ men’s doubles match. B. Sai Praneeth lost in men’s single category to Zilbarman Misha in  Group ‘D’ encounter.

Shooter Saurabh Chaudhary was placed at 7th number in 10- metre Air Pistol finals. Earlier today, India started its men's hockey campaign with a win, beating New Zealand 3-2 in Pool A opening match. Rupinder Pal Singh scored one goal while Harmanpreet Singh scored 2 goals. Indian women will also start their campaign against Netherlands at 5.15 pm today.

In the Women’s 10m air rifle qualification event, India failed to qualify for the final round at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Former World No.1 Apurvi Chandela finished at 36th place in her qualification round. She could manage only a 621.9.

China clinched its first gold medal in Tokyo Olympics in women's 10m air rifle shooting. Yang Qian set an Olympic record of 251.8 to win the medal at the Asaka Shooting Range. Russia's Anastasiia won silver while Switzerland's Nina Christen won the first bronze medal of Tokyo 2020.
