in DNDQuick

New Delhi: MPs may have to attend Parliament on New Year's day as the schedule planned for the winter session will see proceedings begin on December 15 and continue into the first week of 2018 till January 5.

The dates are rather different from the usual winter sessions that end ahead of Christmas. The session is expected to have around 14 sittings and will be one of the shortest in the last 10 years. The winter session of 2013 was the shortest at 11 sittings.

Parliament will meet a day after polling in Gujarat ends and while the opposition has accused the government of delaying the session in order to escape being questioned on thorny issues like demonetisation and the rollout of the goods and services tax, finance minister Arun Jaitley said normally, elections and Parliament sessions don't overlap.
