New Delhi: Violence continued unabated in the hills of West Bengal with one person was killed and 35 security personnel injured on Saturday as the region witnessed widespread clashes between GorkhaJanmuktiMorcha (GJM) activists and the police. West Bengal ADG (law and order) Anuj Sharma said in Kolkata that this was the first death since violent protests returned to Darjeeling on June 8.

The indefinite shutdown to press for a separate Gorkhaland entered the fourth day on Sunday.

Police said, GJM supporters hurled petrol bombs, stones and bottles at them at several places which led the security forces to lob teargas shells and resort to baton-charge to disperse the mobs. Army contingents were deployed to control the situation and they staged flag marches in several areas of the violence-hit hill district.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday spoke to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Sources said, they discussed the current situation in Darjeeling.

The GorkhaJanamuktiMorcha (GJM) has ruled out any discussion with West Bengal government but said it is comfortable in holding talks with the BJP-led government at the Centre.
GJM leader BinayTamang said in Darjeeling on Saturday that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has insulted them by calling them terrorists.
