A meeting of top BJP leaders is underway at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official residence in New Delhi. The meeting has been convened to discuss government formation in the four states where BJP retained power in the recently-concluded assembly elections.

Apart from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president JP Nadda and the party's National General Secretary (Organisation), BL Santhosh, are attending the meeting.

On Monday, the BJP's parliamentary board appointed Amit Shah as the central observer for UP and BJP vice-president Raghubar Das as co-observer. Rajnath Singh was appointed the central observer for Uttarakhand and Kiren Rijiju for Manipur.

The BJP was able to retain power in four of the five states that went to polls earlier this year - Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP won 255 out of 403 seats, while its allies Apna Dal (Soneylal) and Nishad party bagged 12 and 6 seats, respectively. As per the Election Commission, BJP secured 41.3 per cent of the total votes polled in UP.

Uttarakhand, another state where BJP dodged the anti-incumbency trend, the party was able to win 47 out of 70 seats, securing 44.3 per cent of the total votes polled in the state.

In Manipur, the BJP won 32 out of 60 seats on its own, breaching the majority mark of 31 seats. The party was able to secure 37.83 per cent of the total votes polled in Manipur, as per the Election Commission of India.

Goa, where the BJP contested its first election without former Union minister late Manohar Parrikar, the party won 20 out of 40 seats, securing 33.3 per cent of the total votes polled.
