Previous edition's runners-up Kolkata Knight Riders have shown immense faith on their all-round strength as the team retained Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and Venkatesh Iyer. 

India coach Rahul Dravid on Monday hailed R Ashwin's phenomenal achievement as the star off-spinner became the country's third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket during the opening match against New Zealand. Dravid said that Ashwin has "grown" and "evolved" into a champion off-spinner and an absolute 'match-winner for India in the longest format.

Ashwin dismissed Tom Latham to claim his 418th Test wicket to go past Harbhajan Singh on the fifth and final day of the opening Test against New Zealand here. He is now only behind Anil Kumble and Kapil Dev in the overall standings.

"I think it's a phenomenal achievement. I think you know Harbhajan Singh was a really fine bowler, someone I played a lot of cricket with; a terrific bowler for India and what Ashwin has done, to be able to go past him in just 80 Test matches is a phenomenal achievement," Dravid said at the post-match media conference.

At stumps on Day 3, India's score read 14/1 with the hosts leading New Zealand by 63 runs. For India, Cheteshwar Pujara (9*) and Mayank Agarwal (4*) are currently unbeaten at the crease.

"Look, I thought we stuck together really well as a bowling unit. 130-140 overs on that sort of pitch and going less than 2.5 runs per over, it was always going to be hard work and we were prepared for that. Everyone played their role perfectly. I felt the new ball was an easier time to bat in terms of scoring runs but we got wickets with second new ball," Ashwin told host broadcaster Star Sports before the start of play on Day 4.

Apex Council member and former first-class player Kiran Powar has asked Mumbai Cricket Association president Vijay Patil to take “legal action” against Mumbai senior team selector Anand Yalvagi for “defaming the MCA and its esteemed committee members forthwith.”

On October 7, Yalvagi, who too is a former first-class cricketer, had complained to Patil that Powar threatened him, asking him to include a certain player in Mumbai’s team for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

However, in an email to Patil, titled ‘Threats and defamatory words used by Yalvigi against the members of the Apex Council of MCA as well as myself,’ Powar has responded strongly to Yalvagi’s allegations, accusing him to have been abusive towards Apex Council members.

Despite being the captain in the Kanpur Test against New Zealand, a lot of questions were raised over Ajinkya Rahane’s place in the India Test team.

Before the match, the former India opener Gautam Gambhir had said that Rahane should consider himself really lucky that the selectors and the team management entrusted him with the responsibility of leading the side in regular skipperVirat Kohli’s absence, despite his shoddy batting form.
