Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party, on Monday, exchanged a war of words over Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's remarks regarding the Gandhi surname. Taking a dig at the Gandhi family, Assam Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that the 'first scam' of the Congress party started with the surname 'Gandhi'. Congress responded to Sarma by referring to BJP leader Varun Gandhi's surname.
"I request Rahul Gandhi to give away the Gandhi title. Their first scam started with the title Gandhi," Sarma said. Speaking at the National Executive Meeting of BJP Mahila Morcha in Guwahati, the Chief Minister of Assam further alleged that the Gandhis did only 'parivarvad' (nepotism) and 'worked on breaking the country'. "(Mahatma) Gandhi ji gave us independence, and they grabbed the surname. All are duplicate Gandhis," Sarma said.
