Centre calls meeting with restaurant owners over service charge issue

The Centre has called a meeting of restaurant owners over the issue of service charge levied by eateries on their customers. The meeting, called by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, will be held on June 2, 2022, with the National Restaurant Association of India.

As per a statement issued by the department, “issues pertaining to service charge levied by restaurants” will be discussed during the meeting.

The meeting comes days after Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh wrote a letter to the restaurant body and highlighted the collection of service charges by eateries. He told them that the restaurants and eateries are collecting service charges from consumers by default, even though collection of any such charge is voluntary and at the discretion of consumers and not mandatory as per law.

Punjab: Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh says all Sikhs must have licensed weapon, CM objects

Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh on Monday said every Sikh should possess a “licensed modern weapon” because “such circumstances are developing", sparking a sharp reaction from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann who said the temporal head of the Sikh community should instead give a message of peace and brotherhood. Terming the Jathedar’s remarks as “mischievous”, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring demanded he be removed from the post.

“The teachings of Guru Hargobind Singh Sahib are still relevant. There is a need, especially for Sikh boys and girls, to follow the orders of Guru Hargobind Singh. They should take training in ‘gatka’ (a traditional martial art), sword fighting and shooting. And every Sikh should also try to possess a licensed modern weapon because such are the times and such circumstances have been developing,” the Jathedar said in a video message.
