In the midst of the Opposition's disapproval regarding a proposed bill that aims to exclude the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the tripartite panel responsible for appointing election commissioners and the chief election commissioner, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh made public a letter from 2012 written by the then BJP Parliamentary Party Chairperson, Lal Krishna Advani, to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The letter suggested the establishment of a comprehensive collegium for such appointments.

#Supreme Court refuses to hear petition against Opposition's use of ‘I.N.D.I.A.' acronym

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a petition that sought to restrain the alliance of 26 political parties from using the word "I.N.D.I.A." (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) as the name of their alliance.

During the hearing, a bench led by Justice SK Kaul remarked that the plea was filed to seek publicity. 

"Who are you? What's the interest? If there's a violation of election norms, go to the Election Commission. You want publicity, complete publicity!' Justice Kaul said.

#Punjab Government Dissolves Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, Zila Parishads; Elections In Nov-Dec

The Punjab government has dissolved all gram panchayats, panchayat samitis and zila parishads with immediate effect and their elections will be held in November and December, according to an official order. "The Governor of Punjab is pleased to direct that the general election of the members of the (i) the Panchayat Samitis and the Zila Parishads, shall be held by the 25th November, 2023; and (ii) the Gram Panchayats, shall be held by the 31st December, 2023," according to the order dated August 10.

In a strong rebuttal to the no-confidence motion against his government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday hit out at the Opposition INDIA alliance, the Congress and the Gandhi family in particular, saying “people of the country” have “no confidence” in them.

Wrapping up a three-day discussion on the no-trust motion in Lok Sabha, Modi said, “With the way you abuse democracy and this country, with the way you abuse me, I am sure the country will brighten the prospect of a BJP-led NDA” and it will return to power in 2024 for a third consecutive term.

The no-trust motion was defeated by a voice vote after the Prime Minister’s reply. Earlier, the Opposition staged a walkout, protesting that he had not mentioned the issue of Manipur even after 90 minutes into his speech.

#Lok Sabha Suspends Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Congress Calls The Move ‘Undemocratic’

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury was suspended from the Lower House on Thursday for "repeated misconduct", pending an investigation by the privileges committee.

On the third and final day of the debate on no-confidence motion moved by the Opposition against the Centre, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi moved a resolution seeking Chowdhury's suspension, alleging that he disturbs the House whenever Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ministers speak. The resolution was passed by a voice vote.
