#SupremeCourt: As CJI Ramana Retires, Fate of Important Cases Remain Undecided

The Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, is due to retire on August 26, 2022, after a tenure of one year and four months as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI).

CJI Ramana's tenure has undoubtedly garnered public attention, including both praise and criticism for a variety of issues. While the Chief Justice took up some critical cases and addressed various issues of concern during his tenure, certain important cases heard by him are still pending adjudication.

With only a week till CJI Ramana's tenure ends, the following are some of the cases and issues that have yet to be resolved:

PEGASUS: In August of last year, a bench headed by CJI Ramana began hearing a batch of petitions seeking an investigation into the Pegasus snooping reports, and in October, an independent expert committee was formed to conduct the investigation. The final report was submitted by the court-appointed committee at the end of July, when the matter was expected to be listed.

#LiquorScam: ED to File Money Laundering Case Against Sisodia Soon; Delhi Dy CM in Gujarat Today

After the ongoing CBI probe into the alleged corruption over the implementation of the Delhi liquour policy, the Enforcement Directorate is also likely to file a money laundering case against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia.

This comes after the CBI on Sunday shared a copy of the FIR against Sisodia and other relevant documents pertaining to the case with the ED, a report in a weekly magazine said.

The CBI had conducted searches at Sisodia’s house and booked him in connection with the alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy. The FIR named Sisodia accused number 1, while 14 others have also been named.

Serve notice to accused before enhancing sentence: Supreme Court to HCs A bench of Justices B R Gavai and P S Narasimha set aside an order of the Rajasthan High Court which had awarded life term for the rest of their life to accused in a murder case.

The top court noted that it was the appellants who had challenged their conviction by way of an appeal before the high court.

It also took into account that the State had not appealed against the order of the Sessions Judge not awarding death penalty to the appellants.

#BilkisBanoCase: US Panel For Religious Freedom Slams Release of Convicts, 'Part of Pattern'

Amid outrage over the release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case, an independent US panel on religous freedom has slammed the decision as well and called it a 'travesty of justice'.  The US Commission of International Religious Freedom Vice Chair Abraham Cooper, in a statement, said, "USCIRF strongly condemns the early and unjustified release of 11 men sentenced to life in prison for raping a pregnant Muslim woman and committing murder against Muslim victims during the 2002 Gujarat Riots."

#CBI-Raids: 'CBI Being Misused,' Says Delhi Dy CM; His Computer, Phone Seized After Name in FIR

As the CBI conducted raids across Manish Sisodia’s residence, the deputy CM said he has done nothing wrong and added that the CBI is being misused. He added that the CBI team came in the morning, searched his residence and seized his computer and phone. The CBI carried out searches at 31 locations across Delhi, including Sisodia’s official residence, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Bengaluru on Friday.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered the FIR in connection with the alleged irregularities in formulation and execution of the Delhi Excise Policy brought in November last year, they said.

In the FIR, the probe agency claimed that liquor trader Sameer Mahendru paid Rs 5 crore to associates of Manish Sisodia.
