Indian firm in talks with Australian Navy to supply made-in-India drones

At a time when top Australian brass including their Prime Minister Anthony Albanese are visiting the country, an Indian drone company is in talks with their Navy to supply its drones which can transport cargo and personnel to them.

The drone firm has been ably supported by the Indian Navy to develop its products including the human-carrying 'Varuna' drone, showcased to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an indigenisation event organised by the maritime force.

"The Indian firm is in talks with the Royal Australian Navy through its local partner there to supply them the made-in-India drones," Navy officials told ANI.

Mumbai: Seizure exposes airport customs escort service

A whistleblower has punched holes in the tall claims of the Mumbai Airport Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of foreign currency seizure equivalent to ₹8.36 crore from an Indian origin US citizen on Feb 20 at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

The foreign currency was detected and intercepted by alert Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel during screening in the security hold after the international flyer had cleared customs and immigration. CCTV footage suggests that the suspect passenger was in fact provided Customs protocol and escorted at the airport for departure before being intercepted by the CISF for screening.

Nirav Modi borrowing £10,000 per month in prison to pay back £150k fine

Former billionaire diamantaire Nirav Modi is borrowing money to pay back a £150,247 (Rs 146 lakh) fine he owes after being ordered to pay costs for the appeal of his extradition, it has emerged.

Nirav (51) appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court in east London on Thursday from HMP Wandsworth via video link and defended himself without a lawyer over the fact he had not paid the costs of £150,247 for an appeal against his extradition, which he lost. The costs order was made by the extradition proceedings judge on January 9, the court heard, and he was ordered to pay it within 28 days and had not done so. He had instead offered to pay £10,000 (Rs 9.7 lakh) a month and the fines team had rejected this, which is why he was hauled before the court. Nirav looked depressed.

Govt brings crypto under money laundering law

In its latest step to tighten oversight of digital assets, the Centre has brought crypto trading, safekeeping and related financial services under the ambit of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The Union finance ministry issued a gazette notification to this effect on Tuesday.

Crypto exchanges and intermediaries dealing with virtual digital assets (VDA) will now be required to perform KYC of their clients and users of the platform. Besides, exchanges will have to report suspicious activity to the Financial Intelligence Unit India.

The notification says entities dealing in VDA will be considered "reporting entity" under PMLA-banks, financial institutions, entities engaged in real estate and jewellery sectors as well as casinos are 'reporting entities' now. Under this law, every reporting entity is required to maintain a record of all transactions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today asked the private sector to increase investments, following in the footsteps of the government increasing the capital expenditure budget to a whopping Rs 10 lakh crore in the upcoming financial year. “The government has increased outlay on capital expenditure to Rs 10 lakh crore, the highest ever. I would also call upon the private sector of the country to increase their investment just like the government so that the country gets maximum benefit from it,” Modi said at an event today.
