Covid blues: Flyers opt for full refund option post pandemic

Travel companies have witnessed a jump in customers opting for an added coverage in their airline bookings which allows them to cancel or modify their plans without pinching their wallets.

The option, which comes at a nominal fee, allows for a full refund of the airfare in case of a cancellation, a change of flight or a even change in airline.

The intermittent enforcement of restrictions brought by the Covid-19 pandemic during the last couple of years led to this surge in consumer demand for this booking option. From less than one in ten customers choosing the ‘full refund’ option three years ago, now at least one in every four customers choose the option now. That is, the percentage of customers going for this option has risen from 10% to 25%.

Supreme Court tax ruling may add to litigation

Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling that “arm’s length price” determined by the income tax appellate tribunal (ITAT) cannot be treated as “final” in disputes related to alleged income suppression by multinational companies will give more currency to 224 cases pending at higher forums like high courts and the apex court itself, besides potentially increasing fresh litigation, tax experts said. The tax department will be the immediate gainer, as among the pending appeals against tribunal orders, 219 were initiated by it, with only five appeals filed by taxpayers.

The SC decision could also increase the utility of conciliatory mechanisms like advance pricing agreements (APAs), which have gained traction in the last few years, as taxpayers would resort to these, with more vigour, given the delays and uncertainties associated with litigation.

Govt talking to IndiGo, AI and IGIA to establish international aviation hub in Delhi: Scindia

Buoyed by the strong recovery in both domestic and international traffic, the government is in advanced talks with market leaders IndiGo and Air India as well as India’s busiest airport, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), to establish the country’s first international aviation hub in Delhi.

“It’s very important to look at setting up a hub within India to serve India. Today, unfortunately, our international hubs are not in India. Our international hubs are either located in countries close to our borders in the East or in the West,” civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told Business Today during an exclusive interaction.

Elaborating on the plan, Scindia said the Ministry of Civil Aviation was already in advanced talks with IGIA’s operator Delhi International Airport Ltd – a JV between GMR Group and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) – and carriers IndiGo and Air India.
