Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Aligarh on 14 September for the foundation-laying ceremony of a state university named after Jat Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh. The visit is being seen as yet another move by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to pacify the Jat community of western Uttar Pradesh that is seething in anger over the farm laws.

The party is looking to send a message to the Jats that none of the previous governments bestowed any honour on the ‘most powerful Jat king’ in the way he deserved, said sources in the BJP.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced the setting up of the university in the name of Pratap, who once donated land to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), in 2019 while campaigning for by-elections for assembly segments of Tundla and Iglas in western UP.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (September 10, 2021) revealed that the parts of Delhi received spells of rain in the early hours of the day. The IMD also predicted thunderstorms with moderate to heavy intensity rain would occur in the national capital and its adjoining areas during the next two hours. 

"Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas of Few places of Delhi and NCR (Gurugram, Greater Noida, Noida, Hapur) Hansi, Hissar, Gohana, Sohana, Manesar(Haryana) Deoband, Meerut, Modinagar, Saharanpur, Roorkee (U.P.) during next 2 hours," the IMD tweeted.  

Earlier in September, the national capital recorded the highest rainfall in the past 19 years. IMD senior scientist RK Jenamani said that rainfall that occur on September 1 was the highest rainfall that Delhi recorded in September in almost two decades.

The CPM on Wednesday named Sreejib Biswas as the Left Front candidate for the Bhabanipur by-election.

The youth leader has been fielded opposite Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, who lost the Assembly polls from Nandigram and is eyeing a big win in her home segment to remain Chief Minister.

A practising lawyer at Alipur court, Biswas is a known face in Bhabanipur and this is precisely why he was picked to take on the Trinamool chief, said sources in the CPM.
