UP Polls: Eye on Vaishya votes, BJP bets on Naresh Agarwal's son

When it comes to politicians in Uttar Pradesh, there are few like Naresh Agarwal. Over the past two decades, Agarwal, 70, has been part of all four major political parties in the state. He has been with the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress. Briefly, he was also part of yet another party in the 1990s, the Akhil Bharatiya Loktantrik Congress, and served as energy minister in the Kalyan Singh government. His son Nitin Agarwal, 40, is now all set to become Deputy Speaker in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, the first time an opposition MLA will hold the post in a BJP government. His elevation is a move by the BJP to counter any political fallout from the death of Kanpur-based businessman Manish Gupta. The businessman was lynched by police personnel at a hotel in Gorakhpur on the night of September 27.
