Six in fray against Abbasi’s bid for interim PAK PM

New Delhi: Six candidates are in vying for the post of Prime Minister in Pakistan after opposition parties failed to agree on a joint candidate against PML-N's Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

These candidates have filed their nomination papers for the polls scheduled to be held on Tuesday.The Supreme Court on Friday disqualified 67-year-old Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for dishonesty and ruled that corruption cases be filed against him and his children over the Panama Papers scandal, forcing him to resign.

President Mamnoon Hussain has summoned National Assembly, the lower house of parliament, today at 3:00pm to elect the new leader of the house.Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has nominated Abbasi as interim prime minister candidate.

Abbasi has submitted his nomination papers to NA Secretary Jawad Rafiq Malik.Talking to reporters after submitting his nomination papers, Abbasi said he would continue with the policies of ousted prime minister Sharif over the period of his tenure.

If elected, Abbasi will run the government as interim prime minister until Sharif's brother Shehbaz is elected as member of parliament to succeed him as his eventual successor.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties failed to agree on a joint candidate, with each party throwing its weight behind different candidates who submitted their nomination papers.

Prime Minister Asks BJP MPs To Ensure Senior Citizens Get Benefits Of SS Schemes

New Delhi: Prime Minister, Narendra Modi asked MPs to ensure that senior citizens get the benefits of social security schemes. He said, Goods and Services Tax is getting unprecedented support and acceptance across the country and that small businessmen should register themselves under GST.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with BJP MPs from seven states at his residence in New Delhi this morning to discuss various development programmes in the states. Party MPs from Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir attended the meeting. Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar was also present.

Shah Snipes At Political Rivals For Lack Of Internal Democracy In Their Parties

New Delhi: BJP Chief Amit Shah has attacked the Congress over dynasty politics saying internal democracy is missing in the party.Addressing a meeting of intellectuals in Lucknow, Shah said that a political party is being dominated by caste or family due to lack of internal democracy in it.

Shah drew parallels between the BJP and the Congress over who will be the next chief of the two parties.He asked the audience that who will succeed Sonia Gandhi in the Congress, to which the people responded saying Rahul Gandhi.

State Bank Of India Cuts Interest Rate On Savings Account By Half Per Cent

New Delhi: The State Bank of India has slashed interest on savings account deposits by half a percent to three and a half per cent on balance up to 1 crore rupees. For saving deposits balance above 1 crore, the rate of interest has been retained at 4 percent per annum.

The bank is introducing two-tier saving bank interest rate with effect from today itself. The largest public sector bank of the country said, revision of saving bank rate will enable the bank to maintain marginal cost of fund based lending rate at existing rates.

Demonetization Move Spurred Cases Of Cyber Crime, Says IIT-K Study

New Delhi: An IIT study has found that demonetisation and the subsequent push for digitisation has escalated cyber crime related risks and India is required to  upgrade its defences urgently by setting up a cyber security commission on the lines of the Atomic Energy and Space Commissions.  

Noting that the government has initiated a number of programmes to enhance the participation of citizens in the fully digitalised economy, the study said cyber security centres set up by the Reserve Bank of India would be insufficient, according to the IIT Kanpur study shared with Parliament's committee on finance.
