18 opposition parties to meet today

New Delhi: Leaders of 18 opposition parties under the leadership of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi will meet here on Friday to formulate a common strategy to corner the NDA government on a range of issues.

The opposition leaders will meet in parliament library to work out an effective strategy to take on the Centre when the Monsoon session ends.

An invite has been sent to leaders of opposition parties, including JD(U)'s Sharad Yadav by Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad on behalf of the Congress chief.

Government says GST, surveillance post note ban to increase tax-GDP ratio

New Delhi: The Centre has claimed that implementation of GST and increased surveillance post demonetisation will help increase the tax-GDP ratio to 11.9 per cent by 2019-20. 

The gross tax-GDP ratio in 2017-18 is estimated to be around 11.3 per cent.

In the Medium Term Expenditure Framework Statement, tabled in the Lok Sabha, the finance ministry has projected that in the medium term tax revenues will show the growth anticipated during the presentation of the Budget.

BJP contemplates challenging EC verdict on Patel

New Delhi : BJP is actively considering to challenge Election Commission`s verdict on Congress leader Ahmed Patel who was declared elected to Rajya Sabha from Gujarat after invalidation of two votes.

While EC upheld Congress's complaint that two of its disgruntled MLAs revealed their votes to unauthorised persons before casting them and this tilted the balance in favour of Patel with the total votes dipping from 176 to 174, BJP said the decision will be challenged.

Delhi Court orders framing of charges against 11 former MPs in cash-for-question scam

New Delhi: A special court in Delhi has ordered the framing of graft and criminal conspiracy charges against 11 former MPs, who were charge-sheeted in the infamous 2005 cash-for-question scam for allegedly taking money to ask questions in Parliament. 

Special Judge Poonam Chaudhry said that charges for alleged offences of criminal conspiracy under IPC and under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act were prima-facie made out against these former Parliamentarians.
