To Moderate Price, Govt To Import Onions

New Delhi: Consumer Affairs Ministry led-Price Stabilization Fund Management Committee has decided to import onions through government agency to augment the availability of onions in market and moderate prices.

The decision was taken at a meeting in New Delhi headed by Consumer Affairs Secretary, Avinash Srivastava yesterday. He said, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) will procure 10 thousand tonnes and the Small Farmers' Agribusiness Consortium (SFAC) two thousand tonne of onions from producing areas and supply it to consuming areas to enhance its availability.

IT Raids On Over 180 Premises, Dhinakaran Cries "Conspiracy"

New Delhi: Income Tax department has conducted simultaneous multi-city raids on 187 premises including those linked to sidelined AIADMK leaders V K Sasikala and her nephew T T V Dhinakaran and Tamil television channel Jaya TV over suspected tax evasion.

Dhinakaran, the deposed AIADMK deputy general secretary, condemned as a "conspiracy" the searches undertaken by the Income Tax department (I-T) mostly in Tamil Nadu and targeted the Centre.

Jaya TV premises in Chennai and Dhinakaran's farm house were searched as part of 'Operation Clean Money,' under which premises belonging to ten Income Tax assessee groups were searched, a senior I-T official said.

Vatican To Stop Selling Cigarettes In Its Shops

New Delhi: The Vatican has announced that it would no longer sell cigarettes to employees in its duty free shop and supermarket — giving up an estimated 10 million euros ($11 million) a year in profit.

As Pope Francis is saying "Just Say No" to cigarettes, a statement cited the World Health Organization, which says smoking causes more than 7 million deaths annually around the globe.

Francis made the decision because "the Holy See cannot contribute to an activity that clearly damages the health of people," the Vatican said.

PM To Begin 3-Day Visit To Philippines On Sunday

New Delhi:Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for the Philippines on November 12 on a three-day visit to attend the India-ASEAN and East Asia summits.

Officials said India's proposal to host an international conference on countering radicalisation may be discussed during the deliberations at Manila as New Delhi is now looking at finalising the dates for the conclave.

The Prime Minister will have a tight schedule in the Philippines as besides attending the 15th ASEAN-India summit and 12th East Asia summit on November 14, he will have a series of other engagements including bilateral meetings with several leaders.

Accused Class XI student admits killing Pradhuman, says CBI

New Delhi: The CBI has told a juvenile court that class 11 student of Gurugram's Ryan International School, apprehended on Wednesday for allegedly killing a seven-year-old student, has confessed to his crime in front of his father and an independent witness.

In its note seeking remand of the 16-year-old student from the juvenile court in Gurugram yesterday, the agency said that his custodial interrogation was needed to ascertain if there were other people involved in the crime. 

The CBI told the court that, it also wants the teenager to identify the shop from where he had purchased the knife used to slit the throat of Pradhuman, a Class 2 student, on September 8.
