PM Modi To Begin 3-day Tour Of Philippines Tomorrow

New Delhi: Prime ministerNarendraModi is embarking on a three-day visit to Manila from Sunday. This will be his first bilateral visit to the Philippines where he will also participate in the ASEAN - India and East Asia summits. 

In his pre-departure statement, the Prime Minister said that his participation in these summits symbolises India's commitment to continue deepening relationships with ASEAN member states, in particular, and with the Indo- Pacific region in General, within the framework of his country's Act East policy.

Assocham Says High Pollution In NCR May Dent Its Tourism Prospects

New Delhi: Assocham has asserted that the alarming level of pollution in Delhi-NCR may hit tourism in the region as the months of November and December are the peak months for foreign travellers to visit India and majority of them opt for the Golden Triangle tourist circuit -- Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. 

The industry chamber interacted with 350 tour operators and based its findings on their feedback.

"International tourists are quite particular about their health and safety and with such negative developments Delhi is bound to drop off from the map of international tourists who will pick 'cleaner' South Asian destinations” Assocham said.

CJI Says Won't Gag Media, Believe In Freedom Of Press

New Delhi: Chief Justice Dipak Misra has rejected a senior lawyer's suggestion to bar the media from reporting the courtroom drama on Friday, where a large number of lawyers reacted angrily to advocate Prashant Bhushan's unsubstantiated allegations against the CJIand sought contempt of court proceedings against him.

The CJI said, "I believe, all of us believe, in the freedom of press. I am always in support of freedom of speech and expression and the right of media to report proceedings accurately. I do not favour restraining the press in any matter. A similar prayer was made before me when I was a judge of Madhya Pradesh high court during the hearing of a very sensitive matter. I had outright refused to restrain the media from reporting the proceedings. Press must have its freedom."

Govt To Bring Bill To Let NRIs Vote, Tells SC

New Delhi: The Centre has told the Supreme Court that the government planned to introduce a bill during the winter session of Parliament to amend a law to allow NRIs to vote through postal or e-ballots.

The SC had on July 14 asked the Centre to decide whether it would amend the electoral law to allow NRIs to vote by postal or e-ballots after the Election Commission (EC) had also agreed to allow NRIs to caste their vote.

Following the Centre's submission, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud adjourned hearing on the issue.

HC Issues Notice To ED In Sekar Reddy Case

New Delhi: The Madras High Court has issued notice to Enforcement Directorate on a petition from mining baron J Sekar Reddy seeking to quash the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 against him pending before a lower court in Chennai.

Reddy is at present out on bail in connection with the seizure of Rs 99 crore in demonetised bank notes and another Rs 34 crore in the new currencies, besides a 127-kg gold bar, from properties owned by him and his associates in December last year.

Justice M S Ramesh, before whom the petition has come up, issued notice to the Assistant Director, Enforcement Directorate (ED), here returnable by two weeks.
