‘Non-Hindu’ entry for Rahul Gandhi at Somnath triggers political row

in DNDQuick

New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was caught in the middle of a raging controversy after his name was seen to have been entered in a register for "non-Hindus" during a visit to Somnath temple.

Rahul's visit to seek Lord Shiva's blessing at the famous temple flared into a major row as he was put down as a "non-Hindu" along with Congress president Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel.

Non-Hindus are allowed into the Somnath temple but have to sign a register before doing so. BJP demanded Rahul specify his religious identity while Congress claimed it was a forgery.

in DNDQuick

New Delhi: Thirty-two of India's top universities and institutions of higher learning, including IITs, IIMs, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University, have together filled up barely 16% of the minimum quota for people with disabilities, according to a survey.

Exposing the appalling failure of the government in implementing the 1995 Disability Act — which fixed a minimum 3% quota — the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) found that these institutions had just 1,614 disabled people out of a student population of 3.33 lakh, which is just 0.48% of the total.
