Railways passenger reservation to be shut down for 6 hours for a week

in DNDQuick

For the next seven days, the passenger reservation system (PRS) will be shut down for six hours every day between 11.30 pm and 5.30 am till November 21. During these hours facilities like ticket reservation, current booking and inquiry services won’t be available.

The railway ministry said this is being done as part of its efforts to normalise passenger services and revert in a phased manner to the pre-Covid levels of service. On Friday, it announced to do away with the “special” tag attached to all trains and had also said the train numbers won’t have “0” as the first digit.

On the shut down of PRS services, it said, “This is to enable upgradation of system data and updating of new train numbers. Since huge amount of past (old train numbers) and current passenger booking data are to be updated in all mail/ express trains, this is being planned in a series of carefully calibrated steps and implemented during night hours in order to minimise the impact on services,” it said. Except for PRS services, all other services will continue uninterrupted.

If not done, vehicle owners may have to pay a hefty fine. Relief will be available only to those who have a receipt or other evidence of online booking of HSRP.

In addition, the date for the vehicles of private vehicle owners has been fixed according to the numbers.

Landslide risk not enough reason to halt Char Dham project, Centre tells to SC

in DNDQuick

The risk of landslides cannot deter the army from giving up on the construction of border roads, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Thursday, defending its application to construct all-weather roads with 10 metre width as part of its Char Dham project in Uttarakhand. Some of these roads, the Centre has said, are strategically important ones leading to the Indo-China border.

The Court was hearing two applications by separate departments of the Union government, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for modifying an earlier top court order of September 2020 that did not allow roads with a width higher than 5.5 metre as part of the Char Dham project. That order relied on a 2018 circular of MoRTH providing for roads in hilly regions to be 5.5m wide. However, another MoRTH circular in December 2020 allowed 7m width for feeder roads on the India-China border.

Congress demands withdrawal of Kangana Ranaut’s Padma Shri’ for actor’s remark ‘Independence was bheek’

in DNDQuick

Hitting out at actor Kangana Ranaut for describing India’s Independence in 1947 as “bheek” or alms, Congress leaders on Friday demanded that the government should take back the Padma Shri given to her recently.\

Kangana, while addressing an event on Thursday, had said that India's Independence in 1947 was not freedom but “bheek” (alms). “And we got real freedom in 2014,” she added.

Reacting to Kangana’s remarks, Congress spokesperson Gourav Vallabh said her statement has shown what happens when people who are not deserving of Padma awards are given these honours. “I demand that Kangana Ranaut should make a public apology to all Indians because of her statement, our freedom movement and our freedom fighters' sacrifice were insulted,” Vallabh said.
