Foreign funding of NGOs declines sharply following crackdown

New Delhi: The foreign funding of non-government organisations (NGOs) has plummeted drastically from Rs 17,773 crore in 2015-16 to Rs 6,499 crore in 2016-17, according to the government.

Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju also informed the Rajya Sabha that registration of 18,868 NGOs under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act were cancelled by the home ministry during 2011-17 for violating laws.

Rijiju said the quantum of foreign funding received by NGOs in India in the last three years are- Rs 15,299 crore in 2014-15, Rs 17,773 crore in 2015-16 and Rs 6,499 crore in 2016-17.

Life Sentence For Former TV Producer Suhaib Ilyasi In Wife Murder Case

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday awarded life imprisonment to former television serial producer Suhaib Ilyasi for killing his wife Anju 17 years ago.

Additional Sessions Judge S K Malhotra also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on Ilyasi, who was convicted on 16th December for stabbing to death his wife.

The court also directed that Rs 10 lakh would be paid as compensation to the parents of Anju.

Govt, Opposition Hold Talks To End Stalemate Over “Conspiracy With Pak” Remarks

New Delhi: The government and the opposition held elaborate discussions to resolve the deadlock in Rajya Sabha over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "conspiracy with Pak" remark against his predecessor Manmohan Singh during the Gujarat poll campaign, but the stalemate on the issue continued.

Opposition leaders met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar and his deputy Vijay Goel in Parliament and sought a resolution of the issue.

They demanded that the prime minister should clarify his remarks in the Rajya Sabha.

DMRC Suspends Officials Responsible For Crash

New Delhi: Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today suspended its four officials, including the in-charge of the Kalindi Kunj depot, where an empty train crashed into a wall yesterday while being taken for washing. 

According to DMRC Chief Spokesperson, Corporation's managing director approved the orders of suspension based on an inquiry done by a team of three Executive Director-rank officials. 

The four officials who were suspended include one deputy general manager who was the depot in-charge, one assistant manager, a junior engineer and an assistant section engineer.

Mamata Calls And Congratulates Hardik Patel

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has congratulated  Patidar leader Hardik Patel for his "tremendous work" in the Gujarat Assembly election, the results of which were announced on Monday.

"He (Patel) has done so well (in the Gujarat election) at a young age. I called him up to congratulate him for the feat," she told reporters at the state secretariat in Kolkata.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo said she would also call up young Dalit leader of Gujarat Jignesh Mevani and OBC leader Alpesh Thakor for their "positive show" in the polls.
