Centre On Brahmaputra Studies To Be Set Up At IIT-Guwahati

New Delhi: A high-powered panel of the BrahmaputraBoard has sanctionedRs 237 croreproject for protection of Majuli Island in Assam from flood and erosion and advised for setting up a Centre for Brahmaputra studies in IIT, Guwahati.

The Centre for Brahmaputra studies will cover multi-disciplinary aspects of hydrology, environment, inland waterways, agriculture and sociology. The central government will support establishment of the Centre.

Majuli Island, with an area of 524.29 sq km, is the world's largest river island. Geomorphologically, the entire Majuliisland is a part of alluvial flood plains of the Brahmaputra river. The area of the island was 734 sq km in 1914.

Finance Ministry Says No Charges On Debit Card Transactions Up To Rs2,000

New Delhi: Customers will not have to pay any transaction charges for payments through debit card, BHIM app and other payment made for up to Rs 2,000, according to the Finance Ministry.
 
Last month, Union Cabinet approved a proposal that government will bear the merchant discount rate (MDR) charges on transactions up to Rs 2,000 made through debit cards, BHIM UPI or Aadhaar-enabled payment systems to promote digital transactions.
 
"Happy Digital 2018. December Quarter BHIM transaction rises 86 per cent to 145.6 million with value of Rs 13,174 crore," Financial Services Secretary Rajiv Kumar said in a tweet.

'Perform Or Perish': Air India Chief Tells EmployeesIn New Year Message

New Delhi: Air India chief Pradeep Singh Kharola has said in New Year message to employees that "we have to perform if we do not want to perish".

Kharola, who took over as chairman and managing director of the disinvestment-bound national carrier earlier this month, also said the onus to steer the company out of turbulence lies on everyone.

"We have to adopt a professional and productive work culture which will hold the key for our turnaround ... your hard work has helped Air India to improve in some of the key operational parameters in recent times, but still, we have miles to go," the AI chief said.

Jayant Sinha Advises IITians To Develop Passenger Drones To Help Decongest Cities

New Delhi: Minister of State for Civil Aviation JayantSinha has said the passenger drones can help decongest the choked city roads and students from the premier IITs could do a lot in developing such tools, has said.
Addressing the Techfestorganised by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Bombay, Sinha said the government is working on bringing in regulations for the drones sector which will help faster and better development of such technologies.

"Drones are a massive opportunity. Like electric vehicles, drones will also use the same electric motors and batteries, but the only difference is that they will be in the sky. We are working on bringing in some set of regulations for drones that will help make the technology more progressive," the minister said.

ICAI Tells Govt To Make PAN Mandatory For Overseas Package Tours

New Delhi: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has recommended the government to make PAN compulsory on air-ticket bookings for overseas package tours to bring high value transactions into the data system.

In its pre-Budget memorandum with regards to direct taxes, the Chartered Accountants' apex body also recommended an independent audit provision which may be inserted to provide for a comprehensive audit of all TDS returns filed.
ICAI also said the scope of filing return should be widened so as to include in its ambit the persons who are frequent international flyers.
