‘Beast’ snowstorm, ‘Emma’ batter Britain, leave 11 dead

New Delhi: Heavy snowfall and blizzards continued to batter the UK on Friday.

The army was called in to rescue hundreds of drivers stranded in sub-zero temperature on roads across the UK, assist the emergency services and help ferry hospital staff to work. One driver working for Greggs bakery handed out doughnuts and cakes from his lorry to people stuck in their cars on A1.

Meanwhile, hundreds of rail passengers were trapped in freezing temperature on trains all night on Thursday night. Major incidents were declared across the south west of the UK and by Friday afternoon the death toll had risen to 11 after a 70-year-old man died after going for a walk on the Torquay cliffs.

India, Jordan Sign 12 Pacts To Boost Defence Ties

New Delhi:India and Jordan have signed a framework defence agreement which envisages a whole range of possibilities from defence acquisitions by Jordan to defence exercises and closer security cooperation.

India and Jordan signed 12 agreements after the highlevel talks, covering areas as diverse as mass media, health, culture and tourism. But the area of interest for both countries is clearly defence and security.

Jaitley Says Civil Accounts Dept Has Sanctity Attached; Can't Afford To Err

New Delhi: Finance Minister ArunJaitleyhas said the civil account department of the government cannot afford to err as it informs about the state of public finances to the nation and there is an element to sanctity attached to it.

The finance minister inaugurated the centralised GPF module of Public Financial Management System (PFMS) for all central government employees and ePPO module of PFMS for complete end-to-end electronic processing of pension cases.

Speaking at the occasion, Jaitley said, "There is a certain amount of sanctity which must remain attached to the government accounting system."

Minister Says India-China Border Situation Sensitive, Has Potential To Escalate

New Delhi: Union Minister of State for DefenceSubhashBhamrehas said the situation along India's border with China is "sensitive" and it has the potential to escalate.

"At the Line of Actual Control the situation is sensitive as incidents of patrolling, transgression and standoffs have a potential of escalation," he said.

The nearly 4,000-km-long border between the two countries is referred to as Line of Actual Control (LAC).

"While confidence building measures are being enhanced, we shall continue to take all action deemed necessary to ensure sanctity of LAC," the minister of state for defence said, addressing a seminar on the Army's contribution to nation building.

Prince William To Make 1st Official UK Royal Visit To Israel, Palestine

New Delhi: Prince William will make the first official visit by a member of the British royal family to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Kensington Palace says the prince will also visit Jordanduring the trip this summer. No dates have been announced.

Overseas royal visits are made at the request of the British government. No British royal has made an official visit to Israel, whose occupation of the Palestinian territories the UK considers illegal.

Prince Charles attended the 2016 funeral of former Israeli President Shimon Peres in a private capacity.
