New Delhi: Death of civilian in Jammu and Kashmir rose by 167% last year compared to 2015. The official data released has shown underpinning the high price paid by the state while battling a surge in insurgency in recent years.

The home ministry’s annual report for 2017-18 also showed a 2.44% decline in the number of security personnel deaths over the previous year.

The report comes amid growing allegations by human rights activists and groups over what they say was excessive use of force by security personnel while dealing with civilian protests in the troubled Valley.

SC Told Furnishing A Proof Of Identity Only A Regulatory Procedure

New Delhi: UIDAI told the Supreme Court that on Wednesday which expressed concern that biometric authentication could lead to surveillance of Aadhaar users. There was no indignity in furnishing a proof of identity as it was only a regulatory procedure.

The court, which is hearing a set of petitions challenging the 12-digit number and its enabling law, said insisting to biometric authentication for every transaction could lead to aggregation of metadata of users, which could be used for various purposes, including surveillance.

“Fingerprint by itself does not disclose any information. But, when it attaches with all the other information, it forms a wealth of information and then comes the need for data protection,” said the bench, also comprising justice AK Sikri, justice AM Khanwilkar, justice DY Chandrachud and justice Ashok Bhushan.

Modi Takes On Pakistan On Terror Issue By Calling It Terror Factory

New Delhi: Referring Pakistan as a ‘terror export factory’ saying that the 2016 surgical strikes were aimed at sending an unequivocal message to the neighbouring country, Prime Minister NarendraModi tore into Pakistan in no uncertain terms.

"We believe in peace. But we will not tolerate those who like to export terror. We will give back strong answers and in the language they understand. Terrorism will never be accepted," he said at the 'Bharat kiBaat, SabkeSaath' diaspora event in London.


"When someone has put a terror export factory in place, attacks my people, has no power to fight a war so attempts to attack behind the back... in such a case Modi knows how give a reply in the same language," said the PM, to which the audience raised slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki jai'.

CBSE Issues Dress Code for NEET Test

New Delhi: While issuing the admit cards for the National Eligibility-cum Entrance Test (NEET) for students willing to pursue MBBS and BDS at medical colleges, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come out with the dress code for students taking the upcoming NEET exam. The CBSE advised candidates to come in “light-colouredhalfsleeves dress” and “not to wear shoes”.

Reiterating the dress code it announced in 2017, the board has added that the candidates will have to report at the exam centre an hour earlier in case they choose to wear their “customary dress”. The CBSE had attracted a lot of criticism last year when students were forced to remove their head scarves to gain entry into the exam halls, leading to protests.

IMD Predicts Normal Monsoon During June-September Spell

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday that June-September monsoon, the lifeblood of the world’s third-largest economy, was expected to be normal this year. The prediction will likely boost economic growth and farm output in the run-up to a general election next year.
“India will get its third consecutive normal monsoon this year at 97% of the long-period average. We see very less probability of a deficient monsoon being experienced by the country,” KJ Ramesh, the IMD’s chief said.
According to the Met’s classification, the monsoon is considered normal if the rains are between 96-104% of the 50-year average of 89 cm.
