Andhra CM Jagan Mohan Reddy knocks on NITI Aayog’s door for special status

Citing the state's bifurcation in 2014, Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy has sought the NITI Aayog's assistance in getting special status for Andhra Pradesh along with industrial concessions and tax exemptions – similar to the support offered by the Centre to Koraput and Balangir districts in Odisha and Bundelkhand in Madhya Pradesh.

At a meeting held on Thursday with NITI Aayog officials, Reddy and state officials also sought the think tank's help in securing Rs 6,284 crore in arrears owed by the Centre for the state's power utilities as well as a resource gap amount of Rs 18,969 crore. The state also sought support to streamline power generation stating that discoms are facing “severe loss”.

Maharashtra govt suspends Param Bir Singh as DG Home Guard

The Maharashtra government has suspended DG, Home Guard, Param Bir Singh. The government has initiated disciplinary proceedings in respect of certain irregularities and lapses committed by him, including unauthorised absence from duty.

Also, Singh is not supposed to leave the headquarters without the permission of the state DGP.

As per the official order, during the period of suspension, Singh would be paid subsistence allowance, dearness allowance and other allowances as admissible under Rule 4 of All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, on production of certificate that he is not engaged in any other employment, business, profession or vocation.

Railways Building country's longest train tunnel under mud mountains in North East

The Indian Railways is constructing the country’s longest train tunnel connecting Imphal with Guwahati. The new rail line route, under the high-earthen mountains, is 111-km-long, from Jiribam to Imphal.

The construction is currently underway and reports say that about 70 percent of its work has been completed. Around 62 km of this rail line will pass through the tunnel being built under the North Frontier Railway. The government is planning to commence the operations by 2023. The work is being carried out under the National Capital Connectivity. The total length of this rail route is close to 111 km of which at least 62 km will pass through the tunnel. The total length of all the bridges on this line is 3.5 km. There will be 10 stations on the entire railway route.

Assam CM says all Indians were Hindu before Babur’s era; Wants to shut down all madrasas in state

Batting for the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that Hindus in trouble outside India were welcome in the country as India is a Hindu-majority nation, and "every person here was a Hindu before the Babur era".

"India is a Hindu majority country. If any Hindu is facing trouble outside India are welcome to the country. India is root of every Hindu. Before Babar era everyone was a Hindu," Sarma was quoted by News18 as saying.

While asking why talking about 'mandir' construction is seen as communal in India, the BJP leader said there was nothing wrong if old temples are reconstructed and redecorated.

SC warns ONGC of contempt over arbitrators' fees: 'You are insulting judges'

The Supreme Court on Wednesday warned the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) of contempt, for declining to pay fees to the arbitrators, retired judges, who have been arbitrating its dispute with Schlumberger Asia Services Ltd.

A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and Hima Kohli said the public sector undertakings have so much money that they keep filing frivolous proceedings. “Then you have an issue in paying the arbitrators.”

The Chief Justice said: “What do you think of yourselves? We will issue contempt notice.
