Truckers Go On Strike Demanding Lowering Diesel Prices And Toll Fees

New Delhi: Truck operators from across the country have gone on an indefinite strike demanding a slew of actions from government, including lowering diesel prices and toll fees. This will see millions of truckers off the road as unionised truckers claim over 9.3 million members and the strike was announced on May 17.

The government is engaged in last ditch efforts to persuade truckers in the highly road transport concentrated economy not to go ahead with their call, officials said. "We held a meeting with Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari today but that was inconclusive. We are meeting finance minister Piyush Goyal at 2130 hrs today," Bal Malkit Singh, chairman of the All-India Motor Transport Congress core committee, said.

Veteran Lyricist Gopal Das Neeraj Dies In AIIMS After Receiving Head Injury

New Delhi: KarwaGujar Gaya, Guba rDekhte Rahe... Veteran poet and lyricist Gopal Das ‘Neeraj’ whose melodious songs remind you of golden era of Indian cinema died on Thursday at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He suffered a head injury after he had fallen at his house in Agra. The 93-year-old was a recipient of Padma Bhushan.

“He was shifted to the trauma centre here last night in a critical condition. He had kidney failure, infection all over his body and head injury,” said Dr Rajesh Malhotra, chief of the AIIMS trauma centre.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death. “Saddened by the demise of noted poet and lyricist ShriGopaldas ‘Neeraj.’Shri Neeraj’s unique style connected him with people from all walks of life, across generations. His works are unforgettable gems, which will live on and inspire many. Condolences to his admirers,” Modi said in a tweet.

New Delhi: Intelligence Bureau has also that a group of terrorists are waiting near the Leepa Valley, Dudhnihal and Kel to infiltrate into India. The IB report also suggests that terror groups such as Lashkar-e-Tayiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad are planning an attack from the seas. This means that the terror groups would try and hit the Indian Navy. The input which has been considered as an actionable one has prompted the Indian Navy to be on high alert.

The attack from the seas was witnessed during the 26/11 attack. This time around the alert suggests that the terrorists of both the groups are training hard in a bid to launch an attack on the Indian Navy. The threat looms large in the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, an IB officer said.

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018 replacing the fugitive economic offenders’ ordinance. The bill empowers authorities to attach and confiscate the assets of fugitive economic offenders and aims to deter them from fleeing the country in an attempt to evade prosecution.

The fugitive economic offenders’ ordinance was promulgated in April to initiate seizure of assets of jewellersNiravModi and his uncle MehulChoksi, who fled the country after being accused of the Rs 13,000crore-Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud.

Government Cancels Passports Of Eight Non-Resident Indians For Abandoning Their Wives

New Delhi: A senior official of the Ministry of Women and Child Development informed that passports of eight non-resident Indians have been canceled who abandoned their wives and fled. An inter-ministerial agency of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a committee to look into the cases involving NRI offenders, who flee after abandoning their wives.

"The committee has received 70 complaints in the last two months. Acting on the complaints, passports of eight NRI husbands have been cancelled and lookout notices issued against them," the official said.
