New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India ruled that women cannot be “subjugated” to the level where they have to only “please” their husbands. The SC on July 30 questioned the prevalent practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) of minor girls in the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, which was hearing a plea seeking a ban on the practice, also referred to fundamental rights, including Article 15 (prohibition of discrimination on grounds like caste, creed and sex) under the Constitution, and said a person has the right to “have control over her body”.

The bench wondered and said, “when you are thinking of women, (then) how can you go into the reverse gear”.

New Delhi: To nab fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choski, the Indian envoy to Antigua has met authorities of the Carribean nation to press for the release of fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choski. He is accused of the multi-crore Punjab National Bank fraud in India.

 “As soon as MEA received information of the likely presence of Mehul Choksi in Antigua, our high commission in Georgetown had alerted the A&B government, in writing and verbally, to confirm his presence in their territory and detain him and prevent his movement by land, air or sea,” a person familiar with the development said.

“We continue to liaise with relevant GOI agencies and the Government of Antigua & Barbuda to follow up on this matter,” the person added.

New Delhi: To replace the Navy’s outdated fleet of French-designed Chetak choppers, the defence ministry on July 30 cleared “platform-specific” guidelines for the purchase of 111 naval utility helicopters under the ‘strategic partnership’ model.

The government’s defence acquisition council (DAC), which defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman heads, discussed and approved implementation guidelines for key projects under the model to boost the indigenous defence sector and ensure timely delivery of military equipment, a ministry press release said.

The US, European and Russian rivals are expected to compete for the Rs 21,738-crore NUH programme by stitching up alliances with Indian firms under the government’s ‘strategic partnership’ model.

New Delhi: As per the industry department, 81 projects for which Prime Minister NarendraModi laid foundation stones at the groundbreaking ceremony in Lucknow on July 29 are expected to generate over 2.12 lakh job opportunities. The projects worth Rs 61,846.67 crore relate to various sectors like infrastructure, food processing and information technology.Sector-wise, heavy industry (36%), food processing (17%) and IT and electronics (11%) have received maximum investment.

Noida and Greater Noida remain the most preferred investment destinations for big projects especially those related to the IT and electronics.Nevertheless, the list also includes smaller places like Bijnor, Jaunpur, Hardoi, Shamli, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Gorakhpur, Bareilly, Rampur and Mirzapur, representing all the regions.
