SC Asks For ‘Quantifiable Data’ To Determine The Backwardness Of SC And ST

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has said that there is a need for “quantifiable data” to determine the backwardness of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for providing benefits of reservation in promotion to the members of these communities.

A Constitution Bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra reserved verdict on a batch of petitions demanding reconsideration of the 2006 Nagaraj judgement, which held that state was not bound to provide reservation for SC/STs in promotions.

India Rejects Pakistan’s Objections on Its Two Hydropower Projects on Chenab River

New Delhi: The crucial high-level bilateral talks on the Indus Waters Treaty concluded in Lahore in which India has rejected Pakistan’s objections on its two hydropower projects on Chenab river.

After the conclusion of talks, the first official engagement between India and Pakistan since Imran Khan became Prime Minister on August 18, Pakistan’s commissioner for Indus Waters Syed Meher Ali Shah told reporters that there would be no briefing and statement on the issue.

Prakash Ambedkar Says Arrest Of Activists Attempt To Deflect Attention From Sanatan Sanstha

New Delhi:  Protesting the arrest of five activists, Dalit leader Prakash Ambedkar said that the arrest of five prominent activists and human rights lawyers for their alleged Maoists links was an attempt by Maharashtra police to deflect attention from the various cases involving the members of right-wing Sanatan Sanstha.

Ambedkar, the president of Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, said the state police have found the role of Sanatan Sanstha in more “sinister” things such as the murder of rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in August 2013.

NIA Arrests Son of Syed Salahuddin On Charges Of Receiving Money From HM Operatives

New Delhi: National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested son of Syed Salahuddin, the chief of the terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and designated as a global terrorist by the United States, on charges that he had received money from Hizbul Mujahideen operatives based in Saudi Arabia between 2008 and 2011.

Salahuddin’s son, 48-year-old Syed Ahmad Shakeel, works as lab assistant in the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Srinagar. He has been brought to Delhi for further questioning, said a senior official of the federal anti-terror agency who asked not to be named.

MPLADs Fund To The Tune Of Rs 12,000 Crore Remains Unutilised Since 2004

New Delhi: Local area development funds of Members of Parliament (MPLADs) to the tune of Rs 12,000 crore have remained unutilised since the 14th Lok Sabha was constituted in 2004. It was largely on account of district agencies and authorities not following through on them.

The Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation’s report shows that as of February 2018, Uttar Pradesh leads the list of states with unspent funds, followed by Maharashtra, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. To be sure, it isn’t clear whether the situation has changed since.
