A Report Suggests, Air Pollution Being The Greatest Global Threat To Human Lives

New Delhi: Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago report says, particulate pollution reduces average life expectancy by 1.8 years globally, making it the “greatest global threat to human health. In comparison, smoking lowers global average life expectancy by 1.6 years, alcohol and drugs reduce life expectancy by 11 months; unsafe water and sanitation by 7 months; HIV/AIDS by four months, and conflict and terrorism take off 22 days.

In case of India, people would have lived 4.3 years longer if the 2016 air quality met the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) annual safe air quality guideline of 10 micrograms per cubic metre, according to a report that uses satellite measured PM 2.5 concentration trends.

A Senior CBI Officer Demands A Court-Monitored Probe By SIT Into Alleged Corruption Against Asthana

New Delhi: Manish Kumar Sinha, deputy inspector general (DIG) of anti-corruption branch, Nagpur, filed an application in the court demanding a court-monitored probe by a special investigation team (SIT) into the corruption allegations against Asthana.

A senior Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer supervising the probe against the agency’s  special director Rakesh Asthana moved the Supreme Court against his sudden transfer to Nagpur with an explosive petition that levelled charges against high-ranking government officials, two of his seniors, a minister, even the country’s top vigilance officer.

Maharashtra Government Approves Quota For Maratha Community In Education, Jobs

New Delhi: The Maharashtra government led by Devendra Fadnavis has put its seal of approval on the plan to give the Maratha community quotas in educational institutions and government jobs. The decision, taken at the cabinet meeting, came days after the chief minister asked the community to prepare for celebrations on December 1.

A bill to extend quota benefits to the community would be moved in the state assembly during the winter session beginning Monday.

The panel tasked to re-examine the demand for quotas had recommended that the Maratha community be covered as a socially and educationally backward class.

BJP Also Announces Plan To Take ‘Save Sabarimala Stir’ To Neighbouring States

The party also announced its plan to take ‘save Sabarimala stir’ to the neighbouring states.

An uneasy calm prevailed at Lord Ayyappa Swamy shrine on the second day of the 64-day annual pilgrimage season on Sunday but many other parts of the state witnessed protests against the arrest of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state general secretary K Sudhakaran, who was held on his way to the temple Saturday night and sent to two weeks judicial custody. The party observed Sunday as a protest day, taking out rallies and hymn-chanting processions at many places.

Fresh Bill Required in Parliament for changing names of Madras, Calcutta, Bombay high courts

New Delhi: A bill which seeks to rechristen the iconic high courts of Madras, Calcutta and Bombay has run into trouble and a fresh one has to be introduced in Parliament to do the same Amid growing clamour for changing the names of cities.

The High Court (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016, was introduced in the Lok Sabha on July 19, 2016 to change the names of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay High Courts to Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai High Courts, respectively.

However, the Tamil Nadu government has asked the Centre to rename the Madras High Court to ‘High Court of Tamil Nadu’ instead of ‘High Court of Chennai’ as proposed in the bill.
