The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday (January 14, 2022) issued a statement on the 'Climate of India during 2021' and said that the country saw around 1,750 deaths due to extreme weather events last year. 

The Met department said that Maharashtra was the worst-affected state with 350 fatalities, followed by Odisha and Madhya Pradesh.

It informed that thunderstorms and lightning claimed more than 780 lives in India last year, while 759 people died in heavy rainfall and flood-related incidents.

Cyclonic storms claimed 172 lives and 32 others died due to other extreme weather events, the IMD said.

Maha Vikas Aghadi's (MVP) candidate defeated BJP nominee for the post of Chairman at Mumbai District Cooperative Bank on Thursday. The post, which was dominated by Leader of Opposition Pravin Darekar for the last several years, had become a prestige issue for the state government.

NCP's Siddharth Kamble won the post of president by defeating BJP leader Prasad Lad. The strategy for this win was devised by Aditya Thackeray, who held a meeting with Milind Narvekar and other Sena leaders.

In consultation with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar it was decided that as NCP had the maximum vote, it would field a candidate for the president's post. Shiv Sena's Abhishek Ghosalkar's candidature was given for Vice President.

Amid the increasing cases of COVID-19 in the national capital, Delhi's Health Minister Satyendar Jain, on Thursday, said that hospital admissions due to the virus have stabilised in the city over the last four days, even if the cases have increased. 

The city's death audit committee, which met on Wednesday, found that fatalities have mostly occurred among those with co-morbid conditions, the minister added.

According to its analysis, most of the 97 Covid patients who died between January 9 and January 12 had co-morbidities. Of the 97 patients, 70 were not vaccinated and 62 were aged below 60, according to the report.

In the first arrest in the Dharma Sansad hate speech case, Waseem Rizvi, aka Jitendra Narayan Tyagi, was arrested from Roorkee in Haridwar district on Thursday.

Rizvi who changed his name to Jitendra Narayan Tyagi after converting to Hinduism is among more than 10 people named in the FIRs lodged in connection with the case.

He was formerly the head of Uttar Pradesh Shia Waqf Board.

Waseem Rizvi was arrested from Narsan border, Roorkee, Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Yogendra Rawat told a news agency.
