RRTS to replace over one lakh private vehicles, cut CO2 emissions

in DNDQuick

Work on the 82-km Rapid Rail Transit Corridor (RRTS) connecting Delhi to Meerut is in full swing, with the 17-km priority section from Ghaziabad to Duhai to be ready by 2023. Once fully operational, officials estimate that it will reduce CO2 emissions by taking around 1.5 lakh private vehicles off the road.

“The corridor is estimated to reduce 2.5 lakh CO2e/year of total annual greenhouse gas emissions, making the city a cleaner and a much better place to live. It is also estimated to increase the share of public transportation usage along the corridor from 37% to 63%. It will further take more than 1 lakh private vehicles off the road and help decongest the NCR, which lacks a public transport system,” said a senior official of the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC).

Madras high court asks Tamil Nadu govt: 'What harm in learning Hindi'

in DNDQuick

"What harm will learning Hindi do? Many have lost the opportunity of getting central government jobs without knowing Hindi," the first bench of the Madras high court said on Monday.

The HC made the observation while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking to implement the National Education Policy 2020 in Tamil Nadu.

Responding to the observation, advocate general R Shunmugasundaram said, “The Tamil Nadu government follows two language policy and not three language policy as it would be overburdening the students.” Moreover, no one is stopped from learning Hindi in Tamil Nadu. “There are institutions like the Hindi Prachar Sabha where one can learn Hindi,” he added.

No Supreme Court relief for NGOs on foreign funding licences

in DNDQuick

The Supreme Court has delivered a blow to over 6,000 NGOs after it refused to grant interim relief on a plea challenging the government's refusal to renew their Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act licences which is needed to receive funding from abroad.
A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar asked these NGOs to make representation to the Central government which would take a decision as per law.

In layman’s terms, the Supreme Court said the NGOs should first approach the government. The matter could be moved before the court if NGOs are unhappy with the decision.
