SC tells lawyer who sought SIT probe into Tripura violence to move high court

in DNDQuick

The Supreme Court on Friday directed a Delhi-based lawyer seeking an independent probe into the Tripura communal violence incidents to approach the Tripura high court where a suo moto petition on the same issue was pending.

Since lawyer, Ehtesham Hashmi, apprehended arrest by the Tripura police, which has slapped a case under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act for his reporting on the violence, the top court ordered the state police not to take any “precipitative steps” that could impede his appearance before the high court. As a special concession, the court also allowed the high court to consider the petitioner’s request to appear through video conferencing and urged the matter be decided expeditiously.

Stating that he has had “an impeccable political and sporting career in the last three decades”, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu has urged the Supreme Court not to punish him with a jail term in a 1988 road rage case in which the cricketer-turned-politician was let off with a meager fine of ₹1,000.

Submitting his affidavit in response to a court notice issued in September 2018, Sidhu sought to highlight that he has worked for the welfare of not only the citizens of his constituency, but the public at large as a Parliamentarian.

“Further, the answering respondent (Sidhu) herein, through various philanthropic gestures has made contributions towards social welfare by helping those in need of immediate financial assistance and by contributing to the development of environmental projects. The above stated indisputable facts exhibit that the answering respondent has been a law-abiding citizen and ought not be punished any further,” the affidavit said.

Ukraine tweets cartoon showing Adolf Hitler with Vladimir Putin amid Russian attack

in DNDQuick

The official Twitter account of the country of Ukraine shared a cartoon showing Adolf Hitler smiling down on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The cartoon was posted by the account today, 24 February, amidst Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.

The image was earlier posted without any caption this morning.  The picture shows Hitler smiling down on Putin, with a proud look on his face. The cartoon reflects the history of the region during World War II, when German forces under Hitler invaded Ukraine and other parts of the then-Soviet Union in 1941. Through this image, Ukraine indicated that they were being invaded one again, this time by Moscow’s forces.

Hours later, Ukraine added a statement, saying that the cartoon was not a meme, “our and your reality right now.”
