After long walk from bunkers, students left stranded at Kharkiv train station

in DNDQuick

Dragging bags and lugging backpacks, groups of Indian students in Kharkiv filed out of their underground shelters on Wednesday and quietly marched at least 10km on the bombed-out streets to reach railway stations, but many of them were left stranded on platforms as guards thrashed and pushed out foreigners, allowing only Ukrainians and women to board the packed trains.

Some, however, made it in the chaos to board a train for a 14-hour ride to Lviv in western Ukraine close to the Polish border. “If there’s space left, girls are let in. Boys are beaten up if they step inside. I’ve eaten one slice of bread the whole day and have just one jacket. How are we supposed to get out of here?” said Anenna Vinod from Karnataka, a first-year student at Kharkiv National Medical University.

Behave yourself, Chine tells its citizens as they leave Ukraine

in DNDQuick

China on Tuesday issued an advisory asking its citizens leaving under-attack Ukraine to behave themselves, remain quiet and show respect to local women and children as they finally begin to make their way out of the country through their nearest border points in batches.

The advisory comes as the first batch of Chinese nationals were evacuated on Monday with thousands still stranded in the country, five days after the Russian invasion of the east European country began.

The Chinese embassy advice for its nationals to remain quiet, courteous and travel in a group was given in the backdrop of possible resentment against them among locals who are aware of Beijing’s support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
