BJP will apply CAA to Bengal, across India, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

With the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) back in political discourse following a brief lull, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the BJP was ideologically committed to implement the Act and it would be applicable to West Bengal and other states as well.

Speaking at an event organised by a media house, in a virtual session, Sarma said, "Party stand won't be diluted, and BJP is committed to the cause. CAA will be applicable pan India. Whether we win or lose, we will support Hindus and minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh."

Questioning why the government was dragging its feet in notifying the rules of CAA, Congress' Randeep Surjewala said Assamese people were up in arms against the legislation. The Congress general secretary further alleged that millions of Assamese people would be denied citizenship if CAA is implemented.

Babul Supriyo throws party's door open to TMC's Dinesh Trivedi

Trinamool Congress (TMC) received a big jolt on Friday morning as its senior Rajya Sabha MP Dinesh Trivedi resigned from his post on the last day of the Budget session in Parliament.

Trinamool Congress called its MP Dinesh Trivedi "ungrateful" after he resigned from the Rajya Sabha, while a jubilant BJP quickly extended its welcome to him to join the saffron camp.

At an event conducted by a media house, BJP MP Babul Supriyo threw his party's door open for Dinesh Trivedi.

As Dinesh Trivedi appeared exclusively via videoconferencing at the India Today Conclave East after his resignation from Rajya Sabha, Babul Supriyo, in attendance at the event said that the senior TMC leader was welcome in the BJP.

110% confident of victory, will win more than 221 seats, says Mamata Banerjee

Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and West Bengal Chief Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said she is "110 per cent confident" of winning the upcoming state assembly election. Speaking at an event organised by a media house in Kolkata, she said her party will win at least 221 seats in the assembly elections.

With dates of the West Bengal elections expected to be announced soon and election campaign intensifying, Mamata Banerjee spoke on a range of topics relating to the election, the challenge posed by the BJP this time and her government's performance.

On being asked about number seats she is expecting to win, she said, "My level of confidence is 110 per cent. I won't say how many seats we will win, but it will definitely be more than what we have won in the last two elections. It won't be less than 221 seats."

J&K, UK space agency join hands on impact-based flood forecasts

In a move to put flood forecast mechanism in place, Jammu and Kashmir has joined hands with UK Space Agency's collaborative project on 'Impact-Based Flood Forecasting using Earth Observation-based Information'.

"Having impact-based forecasts of flood risks will be useful for efficient, effective contingency planning and swift evaluation of severity for necessary response," Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was quoted as saying in an official statement.

He observed that international collaboration adds specific value in helping analyse the past flood events and identify relations between predicted floods and their impact.

Fight between PM Modi's 'development model' and Mamata's 'destruction model': Amit Shah in Bengal

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, launched an attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing a rally in West Bengal's Cooch Behar. The poll bound state goes to elections this year.  Amit Shah claimed that the upcoming state Assembly elections would be a fight between Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'development model' and the Trinamool Congress' 'destruction model.

Shah was addressing a rally in West Bengal's Cooch Behar before flagging off the fourth of five 'Parivartan Yatras' launched by BJP President JP Nadda on February 6.

In his address Shah said that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has deprived the state of Central schemes. "TMC did nothing for the people of Bengal," he said. "Once BJP comes to power in Bengal, in the 1st cabinet meeting, we will transfer the money from the Central scheme to farmers that were blocked by the Mamata government. Mamata Banerjee will not be Chief Minister post-May," he said.
