Myanmar's military junta limits people's access to internet, seizes satellite TV dishes

in DNDQuick

An information blackout under Myanmar's military junta worsened on Thursday as fiber broadband service, the last legal way for ordinary people to access the internet, became intermittently inaccessible on several networks. Authorities in some areas have also begun confiscating satellite dishes used to access international news broadcasts.

Protests against the Feb 1 coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi continued Thursday despite the killing of 11 people by security forces a day earlier.

It was unclear if the internet interruptions for at least two service providers, MBT and Infinite Networks, were temporary. MBT said its service was halted by a break in the line between Yangon and Mandalay, the country's two biggest cities, but internet users had been complaining for the past week of major slowdowns in the services.

Anil Ambani's son Anmol slams Maharashtra Govt for imposing restrictions: 'What does essential even mean'

in DNDQuick

At a time when the Maharashtra government imposed lockdown-like restrictions across the state to control the spread of coronavirus, Reliance Capital director Anmol Ambani on Tuesday slammed the state government in a series of tweets for putting restrictions on businesses. He also hit out at Maharashtra authorities for terming works of actors, professional cricketers and politicians as 'essential' but not allowing the businessmen to continue on regular terms.

Taking to Twitter, the elder son of Anil Ambani accused the state administration of categorising work based on priority.

"Professional 'actors' can continue shooting their films. Professional 'cricketers' can play their sport late into the night. Professional 'politicians' can continue their rallies with masses of people. But YOUR business or work is not ESSENTIAL. Still don't get it?" Anmol Ambani said.

Suspended assistant police inspector (API) Sachin Vaze was posted in the crime intelligence unit (CIU) in June last year on the insistence of former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh despite opposition from a top crime branch officer and reported directly to the former police chief, according to a report sent by Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale to the Maharashtra government.

According to the Mumbai police chief’s report seen by HT, Vaze bypassed protocol and hierarchy to directly report to his predecessor who practically took all critical decisions relating to arrests, raids, remand applications and the police stand on anticipatory bail in cases handled by Sachin Vaze’s team.

“Vaze used to accompany Param Bir Singh during the briefing to the minister, home, on critical cases including TRP scam, Antilia explosive scare, Dilip Chhabria’s arrest. Vaze never obeyed the hierarchy of ranks to report over the cases under investigation,” the document said.
