Later in the evening, a denial came from the Election Commission that it was not considering any such step. However, Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal, had called a meeting of all political parties on Friday to discuss strict compliance of COVID-19 guidelines. This step reportedly was triggered by the Calcutta High Court expressing its concern over gross violations of COVID-19 guidelines endangering people’s lives. This is the culmination of days of television reports showing blatant violations of guidelines by all political parties, taking out big rallies where no social distancing was observed and no face masks were worn.

Bihar Assembly Speaker orders closure of Assembly after 44 test positive in 3 days

With surge in Covid-19 pandemic in Bihar in general and in Patna in particular, Speaker Vijay Kumar Sinha on Friday ordered complete closure of the Bihar Legislative Assembly secretariat from April 17 to April 25.

The decision was taken after 44 Vidhan Sabha secretariat officials and staff tested positive within three days. After getting information about some officials and staff testing positive for Covid-19, the Speaker had ordered testing of all the officials and staff since April 13 and within two days 24 of them were detected positive.

Karnataka Sees Biggest Single Day Jump of 14,738 COVID-19 Cases, 66 Deaths

Karnataka has reported its sharpest single day spike of 14,738 fresh coronavirus cases and 66 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 11.09 lakh and the toll to 13,112, the Health department said on Thursday. The state had previously reported its biggest single day spike of 11,265 cases on Wednesday.

Out of the 14,738 fresh cases reported on Thursday, 10,497 cases were from Bengaluru Urban alone. The day also saw 3,591 patients getting discharged after recovery.

As of April 15 evening, cumulatively 11,09,650 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 13,112 deaths and 9,99,958 discharges, the Health department said in its bulletin. It said, out of 96,561 active cases, 96,006 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 555 are in ICU.

Delhi reports 16,699 new Covid-19 cases, 112 deaths in last 24 hours, active caseload tops 54,000

With 16,699 new Covid-19 cases and 112 fatalities in the last 24 hours, Delhi’s cases tally reached 784,137 and the death toll climbed to 11,652, a health department bulletin released on Thursday showed. Earlier on Wednesday, 17,282 patients tested positive for the coronavirus disease in the city, its highest tally in a 24-hour period.

Active cases in the capital city witnessed an increase of over 3,500 cases and currently stands at 54,309 from the 50,736 reported on the previous day.

The bulletin also showed that as many as 13,014 patients recovered from the disease on the day, taking the overall recoveries to 718,176. With this, the recovery rate reached 91.58 per cent.

59 percent Delhi residents in favour of a 3-week lockdown in Delhi, says a survey

According to a new survey, 59 per cent of Delhi residents are in favour of a 3-week lockdown in the national capital. As per the Local Circles survey, 16 per cent of Delhiites were in support of lockdown at the end of March and the number of people supporting it has risen by 275 per cent in less than three weeks.

COVID-19 cases are rising exponentially amid the SARS-COV-2 variant propagating in Delhi with the city registering a 4,200 per cent increase in its daily caseload within the last 30 days.

On March 15th, the city had 400 Covid cases which on April 14th had gone up to 17,282. The positivity rate is currently at 15.92 per cent, with 7,67,438 positive cases, which is the highest ever in the state. Notably, 91.92 per cent of ventilator beds are currently occupied, with only 99 beds now available from the total 1,226 beds.
