Govt asks major ports to waive all charges for ships carrying oxygen, related equipment

The government on Sunday said it has directed all major ports to waive all charges for ships carrying oxygen and related equipment amid a massive surge in coronavirus infections across the country. In a statement, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said it has directed all major ports to accord the highest priority in the berthing sequence to the vessels carrying consignments of medical grade oxygen, oxygen tanks, oxygen bottles, portable oxygen generators and oxygen concentrators.

"In view of the excessive requirement of oxygen and related equipment in the country, the Government of India has directed all major ports, including the Kamarajar Port Limited, to waive off all charges levied by major port trusts (including vessel-related charges, storage charges, etc.)," the statement said. Port chairpersons have been asked to personally supervise logistics operations to ensure unhindered movement of such consignments for berthing of such vessel on top priority in the port, unloading of oxygen-related cargo, coordination with customs and other authorities for speedy clearance/ documentation and expeditious evacuation, it further said.

Delhi lockdown extended by 1 week as oxygen situation still 'under stress': CM Arvind Kejriwal

This means the lockdown in the city has been extended till 5 am on May 3, 2o21.

“Extending lockdown for another week is needed. The oxygen situation continues to be under stress and we need at least 700 metric tonnes (MT) of oxygen,” Kejriwal explained.

He said that while the Centre on April 24 extended Delhi’s oxygen quota from 470 MT to 480 MT, the city received only 330-335 MT till yesterday.

“The entire team is busy over night to divert oxygen supply wherever needed, but management of oxygen supply is needed. We are now making a portal, where everyone involved in the cycle – from manufacturers to hospitals will have to update their status every two hours. This will allow us to take timely action,” he added.

'Corona Curfew' in Bhopal extended till May 3, CM announces relief for street vendors, farmers

The 'corona curfew' imposed in Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh to tackle the surge in COVID-19 cases has been extended till May 3, an official said on Sunday. The curfew in the state capital was set to end at 6am on April 26.

It has been extended in Bhopal and Berasia town of the district till 6am on May 3, an order by Collector Avinash Lavaniya said. A week-long 'corona curfew' was first imposed in Bhopal city from 9 pm on April 12 to curb the rising cases of COVID-19. It was further extended for another week from April 19 to April 26.

Delhi on fire: Over 15 people dying every hour in the National Capital

Amid a massive shortage of medical oxygen in the national capital, hourly deaths in Delhi this week since Monday increased to over 12 from about five registered last week, official data revealed.

Between Monday and Saturday (April 19 and 24), Delhi reported 1,777 deaths – over 12 deaths per hour on an average, the government data showed.

During the same period last week (between April 12 and 17), Delhi reported 677 deaths – about five deaths per hour. This week, the number of deaths on an hourly basis was more than 10 on an average.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan urges Centre to start Covid hospital at Talcher with 100 ventilators

Union petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday urged his cabinet colleague Pralhad Joshi, minister of coal and mines, to declare Nehru Satabdi Central Hospital (NSCH) of MCL at Talcher as Covid hospital with ICU facilities. He also requested Joshi to give permission for installation of 100 ventilators at the hospital.

“To bolster and support the decisive steps taken by Prime Minister Modi in fast-tracking India’s vaccination programme, the nation must simultaneously and rapidly ramp up all available health infrastructures for treating the mounting Covid cases,” said Pradhan in a letter to Joshi.
