Mumbai is facing its first-ever cyclone in June

in DNDQuick

If a cyclone makes landfall in Mumbai this week, it will be one for the record books. The city is on red alert as it braces for its first-ever cyclone in recent history at this time of the year — November 2009's Cyclone Phyan was a near miss — and there is no record of one making landfall here in June. An 1882 Bombay cyclone that was supposed to have killed 100,000 was shown by scientist Adam Sobel to be an urban legend.

Cyclone Nisarga developing over the Arabian Sea — is the second to be forming near India in a fortnight, after Cyclone Amphan that caused widespread destruction in West Bengal and parts of Odisha on May 20. The cyclone is expected to make landfall just 110kmph north of Mumbai on June 3, and is likely to trigger flash floods all along Maharashtra's coast, including in the metropolitan region. Wind speed could reach 115kmph, with gales of up to 125kmph.

A double dose of Covid-19 vaccines is almost as effective against the fast-spreading variant of the coronavirus first identified in India as it is against Britain’s dominant strain, English health officials said. Britain’s health minister said the data was groundbreaking and he was increasingly hopeful that the government would be able to lift more COVID restrictions next month. A study by Public Health England found the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was 88% effective against symptomatic disease from the B.1.617.2 variant two weeks after the second dose. That compared with 93% effectiveness against the B.1.1.7 “Kent” strain which is Britain’s dominant COVID variant. Two doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine were 60% effective against symptomatic disease from the Indian variant compared with 66% effectiveness against the Kent variant, PHE said.

The minister has junked the allegations, saying he is ready to face the probe. Meanwhile, Siddharth University Vice-Chancellor Surendra Dubey said they will initiate “penal action” if Arun Dwivedi’s EWS certificate was found fake.

Arun Dwivedi was appointed as assistant professor at the Psychology Department under the economically weaker section (EWS) quota on May 21, the VC said. The university had invited applications for two posts, one under the EWS quota and the other in the OBC category.
