The first challenge to the Supreme Court judgment upholding the provisions of search, seizure and arrest under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) 2002 was filed on Monday in the Supreme Court by parliamentarian Karti Chidambaram, an accused in the INX Media case.

The review petition, filed by Chidambaram’s lawyer Shally Bhasin, was mentioned by advocate Arshdeep Singh on Monday before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana. The top court assured him of an urgent listing.

Although review petitions are not heard in open court, Chidambaram attached two separate applications seeking permission for the matter to be heard in open court and another seeking stay of the top court judgment of July 27.

#WelfareSchemes: Aren’t Loan Waivers For Rich Freebies, Asks DMK in Supreme Court

The DMK on Saturday told the Supreme Court not to wade into the legislative arena by setting up an expert committee to examine the validity of welfare schemes, mischievously termed “freebies” by a PIL, and directed its ire against the petitioner for targeting aid to the poor instead of the massive “loan waivers” favouring the rich.

The DMK, in its written submissions, said the Narendra Modi government, in its first three years (2014-17), had written off Rs 72,000 crore loans of the Adani Group and in the past five years (2017-22), public sector banks have written off loans worth Rs 7. 27 lakh crore.

“Are these not freebies for corporates? What is the justification for wanting to prevent welfare measures like food, education and travel subsidies for the poor and downtrodden but continuing to give large tax breaks for corporates? This is the culture we need to end, not target the hungry stomach of the farmer or the educational aspirations of a child from the poor and downtrodden background,” the DMK said.

#HomeForRohingyas: Hardeep Singh Puri Says MHA Statement Gives 'Correct Position' On Rohingya Refugees; AAP Hits Back

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Wednesday (August 17, 2022) courted a controversy after he said that Rohingya refugees will be shifted to apartments in Bakkarwala in outer Delhi and will also be provided basic amenities and police protection. Hours later, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) clarified that it had "not given any directions" to provide flats to Rohingya Muslims in Delhi and asked the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to ensure the illegal foreigners remained at their present location. The MHA also said the Rohingya illegal foreigners are to be kept in detention centres until their deportation as per the law and the Delhi government has been directed to declare the current site of their stay as a detention centre.
