Police stations to act as cradles for abandoned children

New Delhi: Offering a solution to hapless parents who abandoned their babies in dumpsters, hedges, train tracks and even rivers or lakes where few of them survive, government will now provide hope to parents as they can now make a more humane choice.
The Women and Child Development Ministry is setting up cradles at police stations, hospitals, and orphanages across the country where parents can leave their child for adoption. Cradles will be accompanied by a bell which helps parents who are unable to bring up their newborns to notify the authorities at the premises after dropping off the child.

WCD Minister Maneka Gandhi has called it a 'humane and anonymous method' for parents to put babies up for adoption. She said to a publication that, “By leaving their child behind in a cradle, parents will knowingly put their child up for adoption.”
The move came after the ministry found it difficult to bridge the gap between 600 kids up for adoption and 14,000 requests.
This decision also comes as a blessing for childless people and couples.  On this, a senior ministry official said, “This will prove to be a safe place for orphaned, abandoned and surrendered children.”
While critics argue that, it could create more problems than it solves, such as increase abandonment, other analysts maintain that forcing parents to keep unwanted children can lead to abuse and infanticide.
Dr Neelima Mohanty, head Communications of Institutional Care Home, Desire Society, Gurgaon said that, “The step taken by government was appreciated but it will not tackle the root causes of female infanticide by promoting the abandonment of girls especially and allowing parents to shift responsibility to the state and as a result, killing of baby girls or even any unwanted infant continues.”
“It is just an initial stage of the scheme which needs to be worked upon further,” she added. WCD officials on the other hand pointed out that the cradles will help eliminate the guilt and social pressure stifling parents. It will also aid the government in ensuring that a child goes to a family with a good house.
