#AssemblyResults: Arvind Kejriwal's AAP Marches Forward To Become A National Party

Back in 2014, Arvind Kejriwal had a huge ambition. He resigned as the CM of Delhi after failing to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill and made his party contest over 400 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. AAP won four seats - all in Punjab. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal was more pragmatic, and decided to focus on a few states. AAP won only one seat, again in Punjab.

AAP's desire to become a national party has never been a secret, and today's victory in Punjab state elections is the biggest stride they have made in achieving that goal. This infographic lists AAP's journey so far in its pursuit of becoming a national party, and Kejriwal as a national leader.

September, 2012 Kejriwal and Hazare confirm they do not hold same view on joining politics and decide  to part ways.

October, 2012 Kejriwal launches the Aam  Aadmi Party (AAP) with other anti-corruption 

activists after separating from Anna Hazare.

March, 2013 Kejriwal begins indefinite fast to protest inflated electricity bills and water 

rates. He breaks the fast after 14 days.

December, 2013 AAP wins 28 out of 70 seats inDelhi and forms minority government. Kejriwal defeats  CM Sheila Dikshit from New Delhi constituency.

February, 2014 AAP government resigns after failing to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill due to a lack of numbers in the Delhi Assembly.

April-May, 2014: AAP contests on over 400 seats in Lok Sabha elections, and wins 4 seats – all from the state of Punjab.

February, 2015: 'Mufflerman' Kejriwal's AAP sweeps Delhi elections and wins 67 out of 70 seats with a record vote share of 54%.

February, 2017: AAP wins 20 seats in 117-seat Punjab Assembly and ranks above the NDA alliance of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and the BJP, which combined win 18 seats.

April-May, 2019: Unlike in 2014, AAP contests in limited number of seats in 2019 Lok Sabha elections, focussing on Delhi, Punjab and Goa. It wins one seat from Sangrur in Punjab.

February, 2020: AAP wins Delhi again and bags 62 out of 70 seats despite an aggressive campaign by the BJP which sees both PM Modi and Home Minister  Shah address huge number of rallies.  

March, 2022: AAP convincingly wins Punjab elections under the leadership of Kejriwal and the party's chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann, and looks set to become a national party.
